This interview is being conducted through Valhalla, and is not complete yet. ~~ Kim
1. How long have you been writing fanfics?
I would say a little past 5 years, with a period of time before that I'm none to proud of.
2. What drew you to the Power Rangers, Star Wars and Buffy The vampire Slayer fandoms?
Power Rangers for a male teen consisted of karate, cute girls, big robots, and rock music. How could I resist. Plus, and I know this is politically incorrect to say to say, Kim in tight jeans and leotards played a major role as well. So did the TK.
As for Star Wars, been a fan since before I can really remember ever seeing another movie. The history, characters, music, and the fact that Lando Calrissian wore a cape and I always liked capes and still hope they one day come back in style drew me in. Plus lightsabers. Nothing better than that.
Buffy was something different. It was unique, so well written, so thoroughly fleshed out character wise, and so well done mythology wise that that I was drawn in like a moth to a flame even though I never fully understood why moth's would fly close to flames. I loved Buffy, Xander and Giles while my hatred for Spike was borderline irrational, lol. But the show was great and I was also a big fan of Angel as well. Firefly, not so much.
3. What are your favorite characters, couples, seaons/movies, and villains from your top fandoms?
Seasons: MMPR, Time Force, DT, and RPM
Characters: Tommy, Kim, Wes, Jen, Jason, Billy, Zordon, Connor, Kira, Zack, Aisha, the entire cast of R.P.M
Ships: Tommy/Kim, Wes/Jen, Summer/Dillon
Villans: Lord Zedd and Venjix
The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith
Characters: Anakin, Padme, Obi-Wan, Yoda, Mace Windu, Ahsoka Tano, Palpatine, Assaj Ventress, Count Dooku
Ships: Anakin/Padme, Leia/Han
The Entire cast except Spike, lol
Ships: Buffy/Angel, Xander/Buffy, Willow/Tara, Spike/Stake in his heart
4. Favorite story you've written?
I have three that are my personal favs.
SW: The Ties That Bind
At its core its simply about family and relationships. The good times and bad and secrets and fights and making up. All the things that seem to resonate in ones personal life.
The TK conversation is honestly one of my all-time conversations I have ever written. The complexities of break-ups and trying to maintain civility when there are still feelings present, coupled with learning things you just don't want to but need to, I feel I hit the proper note. There's s section of it when they talk about if they slept with the other people they dated or not and Kim's reaction to Tommy having never slept with Katherine while she knows she did sleep with her guy always strikes me. I really like how I handled it.
Erotica isn't easy to write no matter how many times you do it, and with Whisper there was a greater sense of passion due to that fact that the characters are separated by War and parted on bad terms. Couple that with Padme, as professional and classy a woman as there is wanting to for once, as is human for anyone, to step out of the expected shell of her life and be provocative for once. So writing her stepping out of herself for a time was fun, and then the actual erotica was very primal and hot. I have always felt their against the wall sex scene was the best Id ever written.
5. What are some of your pet peeves as a writer?
Jesus, where to start, lol. People who struggle to even write a summary of their story and simply write "I know this summary sucks but trust me, the story is better inside." Anything along those lines drives me crazy as it shows that even the writer doesn't know what their story is about and hasn't given it enough forethought to understand the story they are trying to tell.
I hate extremely short stories that are barely a page long.
I detest authors who demand a minimum number of reviews before they post the next chapter, effectively holding the story hostage for praise. That is just so disappointing and any author that does it won't get a second read much less a review from me.
Writers who never show their work to anyone before posting. Look, we all need beta's whether they story-beta or grammar-beta. These people help you with pace, flow, sense, dialogue, and reason. I have never posted a story in the last five years that wasn't shown to at least 3 people beforehand. Its just cause sometimes you miss things. Writing is hard. We read, rewrite, read, rewrite, read, and rewrite probably several times and can still miss even the most basic things in our work. But a person whom you respect can give you a idea of what way to go. A suggestion of something you might never of thought of. Or maybe catch a error that doesn't correspond with the chapter before.
Bad, stupid, undo-able in real life smut. Lol, there are tons of online resources to use in order to assist anyone in writing erotica. There are authors of erotica. Use them all for research, expertise, help, and ideas. There is nothing at all wrong with asking someone for help when writing a story. I do it all the time.
Terrible grammar. Look, I can't drive a car if the steering wheel is on the front hood. And I can't read your story if the grammar and spelling is so poor it makes no sense to me. Again, find a beta. They are out there. Use them.
6. What advice would you give to a new writer?
7. If your house was on fire, what one thing would you take with you?
A "Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament" souvenir plaque with two pictures inside. It holds a very special place in my heart. All my computer stuff, fuck it, lol. All my fics are in my head anyway:)
8. If you could have one season of your favorite show to write or rewrite, what show would it be, what season would it be, and what would you do?
Hmmm... I would Re-write Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 7 - That season just failed in so many ways and wasn't the end I felt it deserved. Forget all shipper stuff, the First just sucked, Xander losing a eye made no sense, I hate the S.I.T's, and Giles didn't make sense to me. Still, BtVS was one of the finest shows ever on television. The things I would change would take me all night to write about, lol.
9. Why do you write fanfiction?
Like everyone who has ever watched a show and saw a great ep they wished was pushed further or elaborated on more deeply. For every show where you felt they jumped the shark plotwise or found a plot arc that was incredible and they just never pushed it, or if your fav couple never got together, got together with the wrong person, did something stupid, or just flat out broke up and you wanted to see something different happen I think my inner movie director has always wanted to create new ways to look at characters and settings and plots. Storytelling is fun and a great creative outlet for me, so writing and all of the zaniness above come from that. I just love to do it and its a amazing thing to reach people from all over the world with your work. I know that of the six things I was born to do writing was one of them.
10. Have you considered writing original fiction?
More than considered. I will someday beginning in 2011.
11. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Hard question to answer as life has intruded on the answer I would have given easily if circumstances were different. Honestly, I love Chi-Town. I'm not opposed to the East Coast though... *wink*
12. What is your favorite type of character to write?
Imperfect people who've made huge mistakes and are learning from them, growing, and taking responsibility for their actions. I don't like cookie cutter perfect people. I love scarred souls, painful, complex personalities, wicked senses of humor, and very sexual characters. Those are my favs:)
13. Top 5 Favorite Actresses
Not in a particular order
1. Natalie Portman
2. Anne Hathaway
3. Halle Berry
4. Angelina Jolie
5. Sarah Michelle Gellar
14. Top 5 Favorite Actors
Not in a particular order
1. Al Pacino
2. Wesley Snipes
3. Denvel Washington
4. Keifer Sutherland
5. Josh Holloway
15. If you wrote a script for a movie, what kind of movie would it be and what would your dream cast be?
Nothing intrigues me more than the human condition and our varied responses to emotional events - beit love, sex, passion, hate, rage, loss, tragedy, murder, vengance, justice or any other event that rocks a person to their core. In the world of fanfic I am drawn first to romance and passion, then action adventure and humor. But an original script from me will be very dark, angsty, violent and with complex characters and complex relationships.
16. What kind of music do you like to listen to? Name some of your favorite songs or artists.
Its easier for me to label the kinds of music I dont listen to than waht I do cause my interests are so varied. I dont listen to heavy metal, grunge rock, goth, eletronica or house music. But virtually every other kind you'd find songs in my car. I have a personal mix tape with Tupac, Phil Collins, Jennifer Lopez, Diana Ross, the Bee Gees, Nickleback, Taylor Swift, Nas, Train, Leona Lewis, Jay-Z, and the Temptations. Im all over the place, lol.
** The Interview isn't finished yet, as Shawn hasn't answered the final four questions yet. I will post this here when he does. Thanks ~~ Kim
